Getting ThereFrom Pisa International Airport, where a selection of cars can easily be rented, to Barga is about 90 minutes. From Lucca to Barga is about 45 minutes. By public transport, one can reach Barga from Lucca by bus; there is another, infrequent bus from Barga to Albiano. Alternatively, one can reach Fornaci di Barga, in the valley below, by train from Lucca, and continue thereafter by taxi, but living at the house without a car, as young people have done, requires enthusiasm. La Torretta's addressLa Torretta
How to find La TorrettaFrom the Lucca ringroad, just outside the old walls, follow the road north towards the Abetone pass and Castelnuovo di Garfagnana (signed Abetone). Upon reaching the foothills, after the poplar-lined avenues and opposite the Esselunga supermarket, the new road branches left (signed Abetone) and takes you through several tunnels. You are now on the western side of the Serchio river, which you follow towards Castelnuovo. You will pass by a picturesque arched stone bridge. The quickest way to reach La Torretta is to disregard the first few signs to Barga, inviting you to recross the river to the eastern bank, until you have passed Gallicano (see map below). Instead, you should cross the river near Castelvecchio Pascoli (top of map). When coming from the south, a large brick bridge appears on the right among a few houses. You should turn right round a blind corner, in the cluster of houses, just after a stop sign on the main road. This is a more abrupt turning right than the map below may lead you to believe. After crossing the bridge, take the upper road towards Barga and Castelvecchio. A sign left takes you to Albiano, up on hillside, along a twisty narrow road. Signs pointing to La Terrazza, the main restaurant in Albiano, may provide additional guidance. From the center of Albiano, exit east towards Barga, its church in view on the hill opposite. You come to a small intersection with a mirror, where you turn up and left (the other road down rejoins the main road to Barga). Then, at the first hairpin bend left, you instead plunge down straight ahead. The road materialises as you cross the hump! The first stony track left leads to La Torretta (see map below). Opposite the end of the stony track is Franca Marchetti's house (with a double carport) where you can pick up the key to La Torretta. If coming from Barga, you should take the road towards Ponte di Catagnana (top right of map) in front of the Gelateria-Bar Onesti from the central plaza in the new part of town. Detailed map of La Torretta's surroundings![]() This map is oriented with the north at the top and shows a detail of the Serchio valley. The main road is left of the river: to the south, it leads towards Lucca, to the north to Castelnuovo di Garfagnana. |
